Tanri AbengTanri Abeng has occupied top executive positions in government, multinationals and national corporations for over three decades in Indonesia.

A successful career with Union Carbide, both in Indonesia and in Singapore, led to Mr. Abeng spending 12 years as CEO at Heineken Indonesia and a further six at the helm of Bakrie & Brothers, one of Indonesia’s largest conglomerate.

Mr. Abeng’s career also encompasses a wealth of experience at non-executive positions throughout this period such as, 8 years as Director of Asia Pacific Brewery, Singapore, 3 years as Chairman of B.A.T. Indonesia, 5 years as Director of BATA Indonesia, 7 years as Chairman of PT MBI as well as, a further 3 years as Commissioner of the Jakarta Stock Exchange.

Mr. Abeng has also made extensive contributions to governmental and non-governmental civic organizations throughout his illustrious career including, 8 years as Chairman of Tourism Promotion Board, 5 years as a member of the National Education Advisory Board, as well as, spending 9 years as an elected member of the People’s Consultative Assembly (the highest legislative body of the Republic of Indonesia).

In March 1998, Tanri Abeng was appointed by President Soeharto as Indonesia’s first Minister for State Owned Enterprises overseeing 159 state-owned corporations. Mr. Abeng was given the challenge not only of restructuring the State sectors but also of undertaking the huge task of creating a new Ministry from scratch. Under the next President Habibie’s term, Mr. Abeng was reappointed in the same Ministerial position.

Resulting from this government post, Mr. Abeng has published a fascinating yet informative book entitled “Indonesia Inc.” to highlight the invaluable lessons learnt in the formation and management of State Owned Enterprises.

Presently, since 2004, Mr. Abeng holds the eminent position of Chairman of PT. Telkom, the largest listed company in Indonesia providing telecommunication products & services.

From this wealth of leadership experiences, in both the private and public sectors, Mr. Abeng developed his vision of leadership development and founded  the Executive Center for Global Leadership in 2002, an advanced leadership program to develop cross cultural leadership skills for the benefit of future private and public sector leaders in Indonesia and Asia Pacific regions.

Mr. Abeng holds a master's degree in business administration from the State University of New York, Buffalo and has completed the Advanced Management Program at the Claremont Graduate School in Los Angeles.
